In order to be eligible for certification, candidates must:
- meet ALPP’s standards of competence in the field of lactation counseling;
- pass the CLC Examination, a comprehensive examination based upon identified work-place competencies derived from job task analysis studies, and;
- agree to comply with CLC Program requirements, including compliance with the Code of Ethics for ALPP CLCs (available by clicking here ).
Can I take the CLC exam online? If you complete one of the three pathways to sit for the CLC exam, you will be eligible to take the test online. If you are retaking the CLC exam, you may complete the retake exam form sent to you with your original test results and write in “online” next to the location information. Can I take the CLC exam online?
What is the CLC® exam? This five-day course is offered at a variety of locations throughout the United States and around the world, training over 4,500 participants annually. On the final day, the CLC® examination, the premier national certification in lactation management for the United States, is administered by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP).
What is LCTC and CLC certification? LCTC and CLC exam certification holders have demonstrated competence in the lactation skills, knowledge and attitudes that are essential to helping women and have agreed to comply with The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice code of ethics.

How many times can I retake the CLC test? CLC candidates who are on the Comprehensive Course Pathway can retake the test up to three times within one year of the date they completed the Lactation Counselor Training Course. CLC candidates who are on the Alternate or Aggregate Pathways may retake the test up to three times within one year of the date of their application approval.
